1. I finished another sock! This one got done without mentioning it on my blog. I cast on for this immediately after finishing my Lombard Street sock, and knit for most of the plane ride back to New Jersey.
Pattern: Snicket Socks from Magknits
Needles: Susan Bates DPNs, size 2
Yarn: Sundara Sportweight, Charcoal over Cotton Candy
Time to Knit: May 21 - 26
Modifications: I only did two repeats before the heel because I was worried about running out of yarn. My sock weights 4 grams less than the remaining yarn, so I should be fine. I also carried the purl stitches down into the toe-- the toe seems too abrupt on the original for me.
I tried out the recommended short row heel. I'm just not as good at these heels. They always have holes, and I dropped a stitch in the process. Oh, well. I'm not going to let it bother me now that it's fixed up and done!
This brings my single sock count up to seven!
2. I cast on yesterday for a new sock, Friday Harbour from Knitting on the Road. I've had a plan for this pattern for awhile now. I really liked what Diana did with her Birds of Paradise yarn in a lacy pattern, and I wanted to imitate her.
As you can see, the colors are blending together perfectly-- no pooling or striping going on here! Unfortunately, this doesn't even come close to fitting over my heel. I'm so disappointed! I could try adding stitches to the pattern (I don't want to go up a needle size because I'm already using a 2), but I'm afraid that would mess up the lovely color mixing that I have going on. So for now, it's going back to the basket.
3. I started a different sock instead. I wound up my red Brooks Farm Acero, and I got started on Evening Stockings from Knitting Vintage Socks. I'm modifying it, of course! I don't want an almost-knee sock, so I'll casting on with a fewer number of stitches and skipping the decreases.

I love that Snicket sock -- that pattern's definitely on my "to-do" list.
Are you going for eleven singles before you make them into pairs? :-)

The Snickets sock is very cool. I have troubles with short row heels, too. Though your heel looks good in the picture. The bird of paradise yarn is gorgeous! I'm sorry the sock isn't fitting right. I say go ahead and try the current pattern with a higher stitch count. Maybe the colors will still blend nicely and then you'll have lovely socks that fit. But if you're not happy with what the colors do, maybe you could find another lacy pattern which would work better. If that doesn't work, then back to the basket it goes, but at least you tried.

I love your Snicket sock. It looks even better than the picture on Magknits.

snicket is very cool. that's too bad about friday harbor. i had started a pair a while back and had the same problem. i can't recall, but maybe it doesn't have as much stretch as typical stitch patterns do?

Love the snicket sock, especially in that delicious yarn. Will you ever knit a second sock again?

Ooh, Snicket is gorgeous in the darker hue. I too am curious, at what point will you begin to knit mates for these single socks? Or will you just start wearing them mismatched. That would be very statement making.

Beautiful! The single sock movement marches on....

I love that pattern! I remember it when it first came out and how much I liked it - there are just too many neat patterns - not enough time!!!!!
You are too funny with all your single socks - it will be neat to see them meet up with their mates eventually! Like a new sock all over again!

I really like the Snicket sock! I've not tried a short row heel, I don't think I would like how it fits.
Too bad about the Friday Harbor Sock not fitting, because the colors were working so well. Do you know someone with tiny feet who would like them as a gift?

Your Snicket sock is beautiful - perfect yarn, colour and pattern. Beautiful work. I'm knitting socks with Sundara's yarn as I type this - isn't it exquisite?!
